I had the Clown Shoe wrapped about 5 years ago and the product life is about 5 years. So, it goes tomorrow to get the wrap removed while it’s still in good shape . I was pretty sure that there was gonna be some fuckery underneath the vinyl from the removal of the clear bra that happened before the vinyl went on, and I was right. I peeled a couple of the easy bits and then did the nose and some of the factory paint came right up with the vinyl which is not unexpected, but also not ideal.
I mean, I like being right about stuff but I don’t have to be right ALL the time :/
On the positive side, I figured out a way to get the ancient clear bra off the headlights without etching the plastic and the plastic underneath the bra is in FANTASTIC condition which is good because OEM replacements are STUPIDLY expensive. Once I get them cleaned up I’ll put a fresh coat of 3M protection film back on and then NOT let it go a decade over the product life before replacement again.

Hmm. Did you heat the vinyl before pulling it? I only know layman amounts about how this wrap stuff works.

Yes. I looked up the removal procedure first. It said to heat the vinyl/metal to about 125° F and then peel the vinyl up at a low angle. The heat makes ALL the difference.
I did that and it still peeled paint. I’ve got a strong suspicion that the paint was damaged when the old clear bra was removed immediately prior to the wrap going on. All the areas that were not covered w/ clear film before the wrap have peeled without damage and paint looks just like it did before the wrap went on.

Oh, I see. It does sound like the affected areas were affected by the clear coat.

I feel your pain on the clear bra removal issues. I left some of the original 3m scothcal film on my truck for about 5 years too long and it was a bear to get off. The new films are supposed to be much better at least. And it didn’t yellow over the years, but it checked like a muther. I haven’t replaced the film yet, probably won’t either. Sorry to hear the paint came up from the vinyl. That sucks.
